New Patient Care Coordinators Humanize Cancer Care
According to a 2013 Institute of Medicine report, the cancer care delivery system in the U.S. is in a state of crisis. While outcomes are improving for patients, so too is the complexity of receiving care. To help patients navigate the cancer treatment process and improve their overall care experience, Stanford has added a new member to the cancer care team—the multidisciplinary care coordinator (MCC).
The most underreported, under diagnosed and underestimated head injury is concussion, which is also called mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). At the heart of the problem is the difficulty and variability in accurately diagnosing concussion. At Stanford's Concussion and Brain Performance Center, new eye-tracking technology is being used to improve diagnosis and measure recovery.
Big Ideas Fuel Stroke Recovery Research
With over five million stroke survivors, stroke is the number one cause of serious, long-term disability in the US. Yet few research dollars go toward enhancing recovery after stroke. Funding from the Big Ideas in Neuroscience program has launched a new multidisciplinary research consortium to uncover mechanisms of stroke recovery and develop new treatments.
