Continuing Education for Nurses: Past Education Courses
Imaging Diagnostics and Interventions
Minimally invasive diagnostic procedures and interventions continue to advance as more prevalent alternatives to traditional surgery. Most patients undergo diagnostic imaging, and many undergo some type of image-guided intervention during the course of their illness.
This course is designed for nurses who take care of these patients and want to advance their knowledge of diagnostic imaging and image-guided interventions. Further, many of us have experienced or will experience some type of diagnostic imaging or image-guided intervention as healthcare consumers.
Topics include breast imaging, biopsies, and tumor localizations, CT-guided tumor ablations, MR-guided tumor ablations using high intensity ultrasound, liver diagnostic ultrasound using IV contrast, CT coronary angiogram, MR safety, radiation safety, CT virtual colonoscopy, and IV contrast power injection.
Program Objectives
- Differentiate breast imaging findings and indications for further diagnostic workup.
- Explain the different types of CT-guided tumor ablations and indications for each.
- Compare the benefits of MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) v. traditional surgical excision.
- Describe how IV contrast enhances ultrasound imaging of the liver and kidneys.
- Explain indications, contraindications, and nursing considerations for CT coronary angiogram.
- Describe the benefits of and contraindications for CT virtual colonoscopy.
- Explain precautions for anyone entering the MR scan room (Zone 4), and for patients entering the MR scanner.
- Explain the best ways to minimize radiation exposure at work.
- Describe optimal IV access for CT IV contrast power injection.
