Across Stanford Medicine, we are united by a powerful sense of shared purpose. From students and administrative staff to basic scientists and medical staff, our community is inspired by our tripartite mission and our compelling vision for precision health. Collectively and individually, we passionately believe in pushing the boundaries of discovery, mentoring the next generation of leaders and delivering outstanding patient-centered care.
These were the findings from a survey conducted last spring about Stanford Medicine’s organizational culture, capabilities and performance. We received feedback from more than 3,700 people, including many of you, from across Stanford Medicine — Stanford Health Care, the Stanford School of Medicine, and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. The survey also found that while we all share a commitment to improving human health, many of us would like more clarity about how we’re going to achieve our vision.
Through the Integrated Strategic Planning process now underway, we will set out specific goals to create a roadmap for our future that includes all members of our community. Together, we will formulate strategic guidance for all three entities that comprise Stanford Medicine and establish a clear set of priorities that will harness the enthusiasm and brilliance of our faculty, students and staff.
In recent years, we have achieved an unprecedented degree of integration and alignment within Stanford Medicine, and with Stanford University. I believe that this is an ideal time for Integrated Strategic Planning. Under the leadership of our Dean and CEOs, there is enhanced teamwork which is already amplifying our impact and helping us to carry out our mission in new ways.
The Precision Health Care Pilot is an excellent example. Designed to bring precision health to life, this project will immerse a diverse group of 50 patients at Stanford Medicine’s Santa Clara Primary Care 2.0 clinic in a time-limited health care program that incorporates all aspects of precision health. Designed by patients, faculty and community-based health care providers, hospital and school leaders and industry partners, the Precision Health Care Pilot will allow us to apply and evaluate our unique preventive and predictive approach to health care while providing practical benefits for our patients.
The Precision Health Care Pilot will implement a new medical model focused on health and wellness that includes digital health and coaching to change health behaviors, expanded genomic and pharmacogenomic screening and a community engagement program to address the social determinants of health. Through the Integrated Strategic Planning process, we will facilitate more pioneering projects like this that depend on strong integration across Stanford Medicine.
I’m grateful to be working with an outstanding Integrated Strategy Team and the Integrated Strategic Planning Committee which includes stakeholders from all parts of the Stanford Medicine community. During my first 10 years at Stanford at the Graduate School of Business (GSB), I created and implemented a strategic plan and long-term vision for Stanford Ignite, the GSB’s flagship program on innovation and entrepreneurship, and the GSB’s executive education business. Working with world-renowned experts who wrote the textbooks on strategy, I learned the power of strategic planning to spur innovation and drive progress.
Launched this summer, the Stanford Medicine Integrated Strategic Planning process is now gaining momentum. Recently, we launched 13 working groups around each of the focus areas that emerged from the survey. These groups are now at work exploring key questions, identifying viable options and proposing recommendations on the position Stanford Medicine should be taking in 2025.
The success of the Integrated Strategic Planning process relies on your involvement, and I hope you will continue to participate by giving input to these working groups and taking advantage of the opportunities listed below. Please help us shape Stanford Medicine’s future.
You, our medical staff, are deeply appreciated for your dedication to Stanford Medicine as well as for your excitement and eagerness for change. Working together, we can transform human health and deliver precision health care to every patient.
