Stanford Health Care – Now
Harnessing DNA to Diagnose the Undiagnosable
Occasionally, patients arrive with unusual medical conditions that their previous doctors were unable to diagnose. Through our work in whole genome sequencing, we are finding answers to these medical mysteries. This is just one of the many ways that we’re bringing medical innovation to everyone, no matter what state of health you’re in.
Using genomics to find answers
A group of Stanford physicians and researchers is tackling the enigma of rare, undiagnosed diseases by sequencing patients’ whole genomes. The Stanford Center for Undiagnosed Diseases is one of seven clinical sites in the National Institute of Health’s Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN). This group of clinical and research experts seeks to provide diagnosis and treatment for diseases that modern medicine has been unable to diagnose. By applying whole genome sequencing to these patients, the Stanford Center for Undiagnosed Diseases is currently able to solve medical mysteries in 20 to 30 percent of cases.
