Impact Summarized
Mentoring and Coaching Healthcare Professionals to Deliver Climate Smart Healthcare
Overview
Dr. Patel was a driving force behind the first now annual NorCal Symposium on Climate Change and Health Equity. This is a collaborative effort among Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health, Stanford University School of Medicine, UC Davis, UCSF, and Kaiser Permanente. The focus of the symposium is to educate and empower healthcare professionals to enact sustainable healthcare practices & goals at their institutions.
Dr. Patel leveraged her voice as a clinician to advocate for a carbon neutrality plan at Stanford Health Care, and she mentored student activists in their similar calls for action. She is creating structured opportunities for students who are developing careers in climate and policy. As so much of health is determined outside of clinical walls, Lisa wants to support student efforts to impact climate and health in the greater community.
Lisa has mentored students on the evaluation of laundered isolation gowns, climate and health equity studies, and the establishment of University and Regional climate action groups for medical students and health professionals.
Dr. Patel worked with Community-Academic Partnerships for Clean Air in Stockton, partnering with Little Manila Rising, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Stockton, and Fathers and Families of San Joaquin. As the Executive Director, Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, Lisa now represents over 7,000 clinicians on climate and health across leading medical associations.
