I have a complex condition that involves foot pain from arthritis, irritated nerves and plantar fasciitis. Other specialists are working on the first two, but Dr. Ratcliffe gave me some very helpful advice about orthoses, shoes and stretches to relieve my PF and increase my mobility. Dr. Radcliffe is an incredible doctor. I have been to him for years and he always so wonderful at explaining what the issues are, telling me treatment options. The level of care he provides is phenomenal. I have a ton of doctors and several are at his level but many more are not. I saw a doctor for my foot problem not realizing Dr. Radcliffe also did this surgery. I went to Stanford and saw a doctor, they took x-rays, came in, explained the pretty serious surgery they were going to do on me, telling me (or I told them) how dangerous surgery is for me, they scheduled the surgery. The following week they called to say the doctor broke her wrist and we would have to postpone. I saw Dr. Radcliff and told him about this and he said I do that surgery. I didn't realize that, I was quite happy. He gets out my x-rays, then he comes over and did something this other doctor did not. He examined my foot and asked where it hurt that I wanted relief. I said here. He showed me how the surgery would do this but my pain is not in that area. We nothing were so happy I hadn't had the surgery which would have been risky to survive (I am on blood thinner and when I was low I had had a major stroke,I spent years relearning how to walk, speak, etc, we didn't want that or worse to happen to me). it would not have solved the problem. Instaid he suggested and I agreed to have a series, like 6, so many weeks apart, of something that would hopefully lessen the pain. I did that and the relief I feel each and every day makes such a difference in my life, I cannot tell you how thankful I am to Dr. Radcliff. He made a phenomenal difference in my everyday life. Plus he is all of the above, extremely friendly, always explains things quite well, etc.

This was a terrible medical experience. My podiatrist swore within 30 second of the interview beginning. He told me he knew what he was talking about "because I run ultramarathons." He showed absolutely no interest in any of my questions. He dismissed my concerns outright. He spent less than 5 total minutes in the room before rushing out. He gave me inserts for my shoes but left it to me to cut them to the right size--and gave about 5 seconds direction on how to do so as he was rushing out of the room. I have had significant pain for >8 months and he sent me on my way without a list of possible diagnoses. I will never ever see this terrible provider again.

Dr. Ratcliff is a nice person, courteous, and very knowledgeable. His expertise is not in question. His bedside manner is however. As he walked into the exam room he did not wash/ sanitize his hands (maybe he does this upon exiting a room, but it caught my attention nonetheless). The biggest issue I had is a lack of overall care. I stated that I hadn't seen a podiatrist in over a decade; so I thought he would discuss any additional issues he saw other than my main complaint. As it was, because it took a month for an appointment, my tendinitis pain was gone, and he made it clear there was little to see or do. He suggested and demonstrated a stretch that might help strengthen surrounding muscles and hopefully prevent future pain. While Dr. Ratcliff has my respect and understanding (he is extremely busy), I will be seeking another podiatrist.

I think Dr. Ratcliff is an expert in his field. and I believe he may have found the reason for the pain I had for over a year, which is awesome. But the interactions with him were not very pleasant. He appeared very impatient, criticisms that I was not precise enough in my description of the pain. He diagnosed it and gave me a pamphlet to read about it while preparing a shot. He came back and started spraying my foot wit a super cold spray. He did not say that he wanted to give me the injection while spraying, and became upset that I was moving my foot in discomfort from the cold. Once I knew what he was up to, it wasn't a problem. But it would have been better to describe the process beforehand.

I saw James Ratcliff, D.P.M. I found his attitude unprofessional. I came in because I had excruciating foot pain, and his attitude marginalized my problem. He didn't listen to the background of my problem. This left me having to correct his assumptions about the causes and my level of pain as the consultation continued. I know there are different styles of speaking, but the phrases he used were so informal and patronizing to the point of being unhelpful. He used phrases such as "that's a major bummer" and "well it's not like you were running a marathon." This blase attitude made it difficult to communicate with him and trust his judgment. Out of the 10-15 minutes he spent with me, he spent the last minutes explaining what he thought and medically what was happening. Whether or not his diagnosis or advice was useful, I left with little confidence in the appointment. I have been part of Stanford Health Care for quite some time, and I know that he does not reflect the amazing treatment I have had at Stanford for my various health issues.
