Our specialists are experienced with the diagnosis and treatment of all foot and ankle conditions, including:
Achilles Tendon Injury
A tear or inflammation of the tendon connecting your calf to your heel can result from injury of overuse.
Arthritis
Arthritis is inflammation of a joint that can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Bunions
A bunion is enlarged bone or tissue around the joint at the base of the big toe. This may cause the big toe to turn toward the second toe. Bunions also can cause swelling and tenderness.
Congenital Anomalies
Congenital deformities, such as a deformity of the shoulder or elbow, may occur during child development before birth.
Fractures
Fractures are various types of broken bones, usually the result of high force impact or physical stress, or certain medical conditions that weaken the bones, such as osteoporosis or bone cancer.
Hammertoes
A hammertoe occurs when the toe buckles, causing its middle joint to poke out.
Injuries
Shoulder and elbow injuries may be due to arthritis, repetitive motion, carpal tunnel syndrome, an accident, a work-related injury, or a congenital disorder.
Lateral Epicondylitis and Medial Epicondylities
Also called golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow, epicondylitis results from overuse of tendons in the elbow.
Osteoarthritis
With this form of arthritis, joints and bones degenerate, usually with aging, and cause pain and stiffness.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis can inflame joints and destroy cartilage in the shoulder and elbows. People with rheumatoid arthritis are usually younger than people with osteoarthritis.
Sprains and Strains
A sprain is a ligament injury. A strain is a tendon or muscle injury. Both are caused by stretching or tearing.
Tendonitis
Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon that can cause swelling, pain, and discomfort.
Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan customized to you and based on:
- Your age, overall health, and medical history
- Extent of the disease, injury, or condition
- Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
- Expectations for the course of the disease, injury, or condition
- Your opinion or preference
We always emphasize the least invasive approach possible. However, if needed, our specialists also have extensive experience with all surgical procedures.
INNOVATION HIGHLIGHTS
The Stanford Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine team excels at developing innovations to advance the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow conditions and injuries. Patients in our program may even have opportunities to participate in research studies of breakthrough treatments not yet available at any other center.
Studies currently underway are exploring discoveries such as:
- Periprosthetic bone mass after shoulder arthroplasty
- Human tendon engineering using bioreactors
- Peripheral nerve regeneration
- Use of stem cells for tendon and cartilage repair
Treatments by Condition Severity
Whenever possible, we treat disorders of the foot and ankle with non-surgical approaches. Our highly experienced team works together to help determine the most effective treatment for you. The best approach may involve one or more of the following options:
Lifestyle Modification
Your doctor may recommend that you change your daily activities to help your condition heal or to prevent injury in the future.
“RICE”
Your doctor may recommend the combination of Rest, Ice (or heat therapy), Compression (with a wrap or bandage), and Exercise as just the treatment your condition needs. Or this approach might help even if other treatments also are needed.
Splinting
Injuries or conditions of the shoulder and elbow may need specialized splinting in conjunction with physical therapy to help reduce swelling and pain, restore strength, endurance, coordination, movement, and function.
Immobilization
In some cases, your doctor may recommend keeping your shoulder or elbow in a fixed position using a cast, brace, or other device.
Occupational therapy
We provide occupational therapy services to help you return to work or other normal daily routine.
Physical Therapy
Our physical therapy team helps people build strength and mobility after a shoulder or elbow injury or other condition. We also help you develop a long-term exercise plan to help you enjoy the best health with the least possible risk of injury.
Surgery
We emphasize noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments whenever possible. But when needed, we also offer extensive experience in all surgical procedures. Our team has helped pioneer some of the most sophisticated surgical techniques that set world standards for quality care. Options range from arthroscopy (where a small scope is inserted into the joint to examine or treat an injury) to complex joint replacement.
Personalized Treatments
Your care team will assess your unique needs and lifestyle to develop the best treatment plan for you. We may use a single approach or a combination to provide you with the most comprehensive and personalized care possible.
Examples include options using your body’s own defense mechanisms:
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection using your own blood’s platelets and plasma
- Stem cell therapy
- Other therapies using your own cells
Pain management
Your doctor will work with you to help manage any pain and inflammation related to your knee condition. Pan relief measures may include:
- Massage therapy
- Acupuncture
- Medication
Risk management/prevention
Our doctors will help you understand your risk for developing a shoulder or elbow condition and help you take steps to actively prevent injury. We may focus on actions including:
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies that are currently recruiting participants or that may recruit participants in the near future.
