Stanford Health Care is a pioneer and leading provider of bloodless surgery
Stanford Health Care has a long history of advances in heart surgery. Breakthroughs include the world’s first heart transplant more than 50 years ago. In the decades since, Stanford specialists have refined surgical techniques, including the development of bloodless cardiac surgery, customized to each patient’s needs.
What is bloodless surgery?
Bloodless surgery, also known as transfusion-free surgery, is a technique that uses no blood products or transfusions during surgery. Our doctors perform bloodless cardiac surgery as an alternative for those who need heart surgery and want a bloodless approach for religious or personal reasons.
Personalized treatment planning
We develop treatment plans which are customized to meet your needs:
- In the weeks leading up to your cardiac surgery, you will first fill out a questionnaire that captures each of your preferences and needs across all stages of care. (Pre-surgery, surgery, and post-surgery)
- You can use this questionnaire to consult with family and religious leaders about your bloodless surgical treatment plan.
- Our doctors will discuss your preferences and finalize your treatment plan with you.
- Your plan is then shared with all members of the care team including:
- Heart surgeons
- Perfusionists – specialists in use of the heart-lung machine during surgery
- Hematologists – blood specialists
- Anesthesiologists
- Dietitians
- Nurses
- Nurse Practitioners
- Physician Assistants
