Prediabetes Treatment
Diabetes Prevention
If you have prediabetes, you need to take steps to reduce your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The most important steps involve changes to diet, exercise and behavior. Even small lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk for diabetes.
Prediabetes Treatment: Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Diabetes
If you're at risk for prediabetes, or you have prediabetes symptoms, you may be able to reverse it through these steps:
- Manage your blood sugar level: Your diet should be:
- Low in fat, calories and simple carbohydrates (such as white pasta, white bread, white potatoes, white rice, and processed foods such as crackers, cookies and cakes).
- High in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Because they are high in soluble fiber, they can help control blood insulin and glucose levels.
- Practice portion control: Eat smaller amounts.
- Stay active: Get at least 30 minutes of moderate-to-intense physical activity most days of the week but preferably every day. Exercise helps reduce insulin resistance.
- Lose excess weight: You can improve your blood sugar level and reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease by losing as little as five to 10 percent of your body weight.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
