Varicose Vein Causes
Doctors don't yet know why blood vessel walls weaken and form varicose veins, though there are several risk factors:
- Age
- Family history of the condition
- Personal history of blood clots
- Vein injury
- Hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control, replacement therapy)
- Tight clothing that cuts off circulation (though compression stockings can actually help)
- Extended sitting or standing in one spot
- Extra weight pressuring the legs
Occasionally, varicose veins are connected to:
- Internal bleeding
- Infections
- Open sores (ulcers)
- Blood clots
In addition to concerns about appearance, make sure to see a doctor if you experience:
- Pain while walking or standing
- Sores near the vein
- Swollen feet or ankles
