Symptoms of ALS
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Symptoms
The early symptoms of ALS can mimic those of other neuromuscular diseases, such as neuropathy, myopathy, and lumbar and cervical spine problems.
Our Stanford doctors have decades of experience dealing with even the rarest neuromuscular diseases, which enables them to more quickly distinguish between one disease and another.
Symptoms of ALS may include:
- Twitching and cramping of muscles
- Loss of motor control in the hands and arms
- Impairment in the use of the arms and legs
- Tripping and falling
- Difficulty with eating and swallowing
- Slurred or thick speech and difficulty in projecting the voice
As the disease progresses, symptoms may include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Difficulty with speech and communication
- Paralysis
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
