About this Condition: Neuropathy
Symptoms of Neuropathy
Neuropathy symptoms vary by the type of nerve affected, with 3 types controlling different functions in the body. Because neuropathy may involve damage to more than 1 type of nerve, you may experience a combination of symptoms.
The 3 types of nerves and their symptoms are:
Autonomic nerves: control things we don’t think about like your heart rate or digesting food.
Motor nerves: control muscle movements. If neuropathy affects these nerves, symptoms include uncontrolled movement or difficulty moving your limbs.
Sensory nerves: recognize sensations, including temperature, touch, and pain. If neuropathy involves the sensory nerves, symptoms include:
- Numbness
- Tingling sensation
- Burning sensation
- Sensitivity to touch
