Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
What Is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus?
Ventricles are chambers in the brain that normally contain a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. Usually, these chambers contain just the right amount of the fluid for normal brain function.
Sometimes, however, too much fluid can build up in the ventricles. This accumulation of fluid leads to a condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). When this happens:
- The ventricles enlarge and press against nearby brain tissue.
- The extra fluid can affect the shape of the brain and lead to brain damage.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: Symptoms
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is rare, mostly affecting older adults. It can be tricky to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to those of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. In fact, NPH may account for five percent of dementia cases in the United States. Symptoms can include forgetfulness and trouble walking.

Causes of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
Sometimes, normal pressure hydrocephalus occurs for no clear reason. Other times, there is an underlying condition, such as:
- Brain infections
- Bleeding in the brain
- Tumors
- Injuries
Diagnosing Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
Our team has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating brain and neurological conditions. We use specialized testing to determine if the condition is NPH or something else. Diagnostic tests may include imaging scans and a spinal tap.

Treating Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
The most common treatment is shunt placement to drain the excess fluid.
