Diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus
How Do We Diagnose Barrett's Esophagus?
The best way to diagnose Barrett's esophagus is by removing a tissue sample (biopsy) from the lining of your esophagus and examining it under a microscope. Stanford Health Care is one of few centers in the country using confocal microscopy, which helps pinpoint the exact location of damaged tissue in your esophagus.
To accurately diagnose your condition, you may need one or more tests, including:
- Confocal microscopy: This test uses a special microscope to create high-resolution, 3-D images of your esophagus.
- Upper endoscopy: We pass a small flexible tube (endoscope) and tiny camera through your mouth and esophagus to examine the lining of your esophagus. During this test, we may also take a biopsy.
