Causes
What Causes Celiac Disease?
When you have celiac disease, consuming foods that contain gluten causes a series of reactions in your small intestine. This causes your immune system to attack normal tissue. Researchers do not know the exact trigger for celiac disease, but there is a genetic link; meaning if you have a family member with celiac disease, you are more likely to get it.
It's important to know that celiac-like symptoms may be signs of other conditions, such Crohn's disease or disorders affecting your pancreas. The best way to know for sure is through screening tests.
