Colon Polyps Diagnosis
Diagnosing Colon Polyps
In our dedicated GI Cancer Prevention Program, we expertly diagnose colon polyps. Even if you have had difficulty completing screening tests in the past, we can help.
We offer innovative tests, such as non-invasive virtual colonoscopy. Our doctors are also skilled in using specialized tools, such as short turn radius colonoscopes, which allow us to navigate sharp turns in your intestines and increase the likelihood of completing your screening test on the first try.
Using advanced technologies, as well as tried and true methods, we offer a comprehensive range of tests to find polyps, including:
- Advanced colonoscopy: Using sophisticated techniques and innovative tools, advanced colonoscopy procedures are available to individuals who have had complicated pre-cancerous growths detected during a diagnostic or screening colonoscopy.
- Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy: Examining the entire length of your colon and rectum (colonoscopy), or just the lower part of your colon and rectum (sigmoidoscopy), with the help of a small flexible tube and tiny camera we insert into your rectum (endoscope). We usually remove polyps during these procedures.
- Chromoendoscopy: Accessing your colon with the help of an endoscope, we use a special dye to show the fine details of your colon.
- CT colonography: Using X-rays and special computer software, this test creates two- and three-dimensional images of your colon. This helps us examine your colon very closely. However, if we find polyps, you will need another procedure to remove them.
- Virtual colonoscopy: A non-invasive test using imaging technology and advanced computer software to examine your colon. What makes virtual colonoscopy special at Stanford is that you can have this procedure within hours of a traditional colonoscopy, if for some reason we are not able to complete your screening colonoscopy.
