Corneal Ulcer
What Is a Corneal Ulcer?
The cornea is the clear layer of tissue covering the front of your eyes. The cornea functions to:
- Control the light entering your eyes and focus it on the lens, which further focuses light onto the retina (back of the eye) to form images
- Protect the rest of the eye from dust, germs and minor injury from foreign objects
A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea, which is most often caused by infections from bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Also known as ulcerative keratitis, the condition can range from mild for infections in the superficial layers of the cornea, to severe for infections that go deeper.
A severe corneal ulcer can cause more serious symptoms and complications, including scarring, temporary or permanent vision loss and even blindness. That's why it's important to see your primary care physician or eye care provider urgently if you have symptoms of eye infection, such as:
- Eye pain
- Decreased vision
- Redness
- Light sensitivity
