Urinary Tract Infection Diagnosis
Diagnosing Urinary Tract Infections
To diagnose a urinary tract infection, we will do a complete medical history and physical examination in addition to diagnostic tests and procedures.
UTI Diagnosis: Diagnostic Tests
Tests to diagnose a UTI may include:
- Renal ultrasound: A noninvasive test in which we pass a transducer over the kidney, which uses sound waves to produce detailed images of your kidney. We use this test to:
- Determine the size and shape of the kidney
- Detect a mass, kidney stone, cyst or other obstruction or abnormalities
- Urinalysis, where we analyze your urine in a lab. Learn more about urinalysis.
- Intravenous pyelogram, a series of specialized X-rays of your kidneys, ureters and bladder. Learn more about intravenous pyelogram.
- Cystoscopy, where we use a thin tube to examine your bladder and urethra. Learn more about cystoscopy.
UTI Treatment
Once we confirm a diagnosis of a UTI, we can begin treatment. Learn more about urinary tract infection treatment.
