What Is Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery?

Endoscopic endonasal surgery is a minimally invasive technique that enables doctors to treat tumors and tissue damage near the brain or spine by using an endoscope (a thin tube with a light and camera) inserted through the nose and sinuses.

This can eliminate the need to make cuts in the skin or skull. As a result, when compared with traditional surgery, the endoscopic endonasal approach (also sometimes called EEA) can reduce the risk of complications, shorten recovery times, and improve outcomes.
 

What to Expect from Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery

EEA is an important option for the treatment of hard-to-reach tumors near the brain, skull base, spine, and pituitary gland. Before the development of EEA, many of these tumors were considered inoperable.

A team of two surgeons — an ear, nose, and throat surgeon and a neurosurgeon — performs this procedure together. The ENT inserts a thin tube called an endoscope, which includes a light and camera, through your nose and sinuses, gently moving aside and protecting normal nasal structures, while opening the sinuses we need to access the skull base. 

Once this access has been established, the neurosurgeon can join the ENT surgeon and insert tools to remove the tumor while the ENT surgeon uses the endoscope to clearly show the tumor as well as all of the important nerves and vessels surrounding the tumor. The two surgeons work together to reconstruct the skull base once the tumor has been removed.
