Prostate cancer growth is stimulated by male hormones called androgens. Hormone therapy is used to starve the cancer by depriving the cancer of androgen.
Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are the primary androgens in the body. They are produced primarily by the testicles, but also to a lesser degree by the the adrenal glands. Blocking adrogens from prostate cancer cells halts cancer growth, but hormone therapy alone cannot cure prostate cancer.
