Hybrid Coronary Revascularization
Our Approach
Coronary artery disease sometimes poses particular treatment challenges. Our doctors might recommend coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) instead of angioplasty with stenting, only to determine that they cannot perform the operation in a minimally invasive way.
Hybrid coronary revascularization can potentially resolve that predicament by combining the two treatments, stenting some blockages and bypassing others. By bringing together the best of the catheterization lab and the operating room, we can protect your heart and avoid open surgery.

- Access to a specialized treatment not widely available. We perform hybrid revascularization without opening your chest or stopping your heart. When appropriate, we use robotic assistance during bypass.

About Hybrid Coronary Revascularization
While some people with blocked arteries need open surgery, hybrid coronary revascularization offers a minimally invasive possibility. This advanced technique combines two standard treatments for coronary artery disease (CAD): coronary angioplasty with stents and coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).
A hybrid approach may help if you have several blockages that doctors cannot open just by performing angioplasty. Instead, your interventional cardiologist stents some blockages, and our surgeon connects a bypass graft to your heart’s critical left anterior descending (LAD) artery. Doing so provides:
- Flexibility: Angioplasty is performed days or weeks before CABG, during the surgery itself, or soon afterward. We recommend the schedule that best suits your medical needs.
- Durability: The hybrid approach offers the full benefits of surgery. During bypass, our surgeon can still make a graft using your chest wall’s left internal mammary artery (LIMA), the most durable and long-lasting option.
- Safety and comfort: Our team performs the hybrid approach without stopping your heart. We also avoid open-heart surgery, with three or four incisions less than one-half inch wide (robotic-assisted approach) or one incision on the left side that is two to three inches long (manual technique). Benefits of a minimally invasive approach include:
