Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)
What Is Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy?
When you have an esophageal motility disorder, the thought of eating or drinking can make you anxious because of the discomfort it causes. Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) offers permanent symptom relief by placing small cuts (myotomy) at the base of your esophagus.
The POEM procedure relaxes stiff muscles, relieves narrowing and allows food and liquids to pass from your mouth to your stomach with ease. This innovative, minimally invasive procedure offers a safe alternative to open surgery and leaves no scars.
With years of experience and an international reputation for performing advanced laparoscopic procedures, our surgeons are well suited to deliver POEM. In fact, we were part of a research team whose discoveries inspired the development of this procedure. Stanford is also one of the first programs in the U.S. to offer it.

Stanford is the only program in Northern California performing peroral endoscopic myotomy (poem), an incisionless procedure for esophageal achalasia.
