Esophageal: About this Treatment
Techniques of Esophageal Surgery
Minimally invasive esophagectomy
At times, your team can offer you the option of a minimally invasive esophagectomy. With a minimally invasive approach, doctors will use multiple, smaller incisions, and a tiny camera to help avoid the need for a larger, more traumatic, conventional surgery. They insert a camera and light into one of the incisions. Additional surgical tools go through other incisions. Minimally invasive procedures remove the cancer as effectively as conventional operations. Minimally invasive procedures can reduce some surgical risks and allow patients to return to recover more quickly. The three main types of minimally invasive surgery for esophagectomy are:
- Laparoscopy: Your doctor uses a camera to view the esophagus and remove tissue and sometimes organs. Laparascopy may be used when the cancer is in the abdomen.
- Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS): A video camera helps your doctor see the chest cavity. VATS may be used when the cancer is in the chest.
- Robotic-assisted approach: Your doctor controls the surgical instruments from a console. This may be an option for surgeries in the abdomen or chest.
