Our fellowship-trained heart failure cardiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating the most advanced stages and complex cases of heart failure. They are also accessible and respond to messages quickly. Our consulting doctors are:

• Jeffrey Teuteberg, MD, is a Stanford Medicine professor and section chief of heart failure, cardiac transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. He completed a cardiovascular medicine fellowship at the University of Chicago and a heart transplant fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
• Daniel Katz, MD, is a Stanford Medicine instructor and transplant and advanced heart failure cardiologist. He completed a general cardiology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship at Stanford Medicine.
• Joyce Njoroge, MD, is a Stanford Medicine clinical assistant professor and advanced heart failure cardiologist. She completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of California San Francisco and an advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship at Stanford Medicine. 
• Anubodh Sunny Varshney, MD is a clinical assistant professor and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist at Stanford Medicine. He completed a cardiovascular medicine fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School and a fellowship in advanced heart failure, transplant cardiology, and mechanical circulatory support at Stanford University.

When to refer your patients for a heart failure evaluation

At Stanford Health Care, we encourage early heart failure evaluation referrals. "Do not be concerned about referring patients to us too early," says Dr. Teuteberg. "We would rather see ten patients too early than one patient too late."

Our team recommends you refer your patients for a heart failure evaluation as soon as they experience:

• Ejection fraction less than or equal to 35%
• Class III* or IV** heart failure
• One or more hospitalizations for heart failure in the past six months

*Symptoms of class III heart failure include a marked limitation of physical activity; fatigue, palpitation, or dyspnea resulting from minimal activity; and comfort at rest.

**Symptoms of class IV heart failure include an inability to carry on any physical activity without discomfort and symptoms of heart failure at rest.
