Children and teenagers are special patients who need specialized care. They experience different conditions than adults do—and they experience the same conditions in different ways. Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley offers round-the-clock pediatric specialty care to diagnose and treat emergency situations and conditions that require hospitalization.
When your child goes home, we coordinate with your child’s pediatrician to ensure that your child receives any needed follow-up care or longer-term treatment.

- Respiratory illnesses: Croup, pneumonia, and whooping cough
- Care after injury (trauma) or surgery
- Common conditions affecting kids: Dehydration or influenza (flu)
Emergency Conditions
When your child’s life or health is in danger, our pediatric hospitalists deliver emergency care. Call 911 or go immediately to the nearest emergency room for:
- Heart or breathing problems: Chest pain or trouble breathing
- Signs of head injury or stroke: Drooping face, confusion, double vision, or difficulty speaking
- Severe allergic reaction: Throat closing up, severe rash, or breathing problems

Newborn Care
Our well-baby nursery provides newborn care in tandem with Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley Maternity services. On-site pediatricians provide routine medical care, newborn assessments, and newborn screenings. When you go home, your baby’s pediatrician will take over.
Neonatal Intensive Care
For babies born as early as 32 weeks with higher needs, we have a Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where specially trained nurses and board-certified neonatologists treat:
- Body temperature regulation issues
- Eating problems
- Jaundice: Yellowish skin and eyes in a newborn whose liver isn't mature yet
- Need for additional oxygen
- Your child can also be seen by our Urgent Care team when there are medical problems that require prompt attention but are not life threatening. In-person and telehealth appointments are available.
We see children of all ages who have injuries or illnesses that need advanced care. In the hospital, our pediatric hospitalists deliver the same caring, high-quality treatment you receive from your pediatrician. For the smallest patients, our specialty care includes a Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
