Treatments for Achalasia
Treatment for Achalasia
The Esophagus Center at Stanford Health Care is the only one of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area, and offers a comprehensive range of treatments.
The goals of treating achalasia include:
- Helping your lower esophageal valve open properly
- Improving your esophagus’s ability to empty completely
Your treatment may include:
- Botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections: Injecting very small quantities of Botox® in the muscles of your esophagus helps them to relax, allowing food to pass through with ease. Learn more about botulinum toxin injections for digestive disorders.
- Heller myotomy: A minimally invasive procedure to open your lower esophageal valve by cutting stiffened muscle tissue. Learn more about Heller myotomy.
- Pneumatic dilation: Using an endoscope, we place a balloon in the opening of your lower esophageal valve and expand it using a powerful burst of air. This loosens the muscles and widens the opening of your esophagus to allow food to pass through.
- Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM procedure): This innovative, minimally invasive procedure helps open your esophagus and leaves no scars. Stanford Health Care is one of few programs in the country offering the peroral endoscopic myotomy.
