Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Symptoms
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Symptoms
Many people suffer from occasional heartburn. However, if your heartburn wakes you up at night or occurs more than twice a week, you may be suffering from GERD.
Heartburn, also known as acid indigestion, is the most common symptom of GERD. Acid reflux, which happens when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, causes the burning sensation associated with heartburn.
Other commons symptoms of heartburn associated with GERD include:
- Chest pain
- Dysphagia (difficulty or pain when swallowing)
- Sour taste in your mouth
- Sudden increase of saliva
GERD Diagnosis
If you experience frequent heartburn or other symptoms of GERD, see your doctor for an expert diagnosis.
You should see your doctor especially if you have had heartburn for several years, and it is getting worse. It is also important to see someone if pain or discomfort from heartburn interferes with your daily activities.
