Chalazion and Stye Diagnosis
Chalazion and Stye Diagnosis
Our doctors diagnose a chalazion or stye by asking about your symptoms and thoroughly examining your eye, eyelid, and eyelashes, using bright lights and magnification.
Sometimes an eyelid lump has the basic appearance of a chalazion but some of its features seem different than usual.
If that is the case, our eye doctors bring in a Stanford oculoplastic surgeon to sample (biopsy) the lump, since skin cancer can sometimes masquerade as a chalazion. The biopsy is done one of two ways:
- Excisional biopsy: Removes the whole lump for study
- Incisional biopsy: Removes just a piece and is done when possible, since it leaves more of the eyelid intact
If skin cancer if found, we will help coordinate care at Stanford. Learn more about our Skin Cancer Program.
