Chemotherapy at Home
Chemotherapy at Home
What is Oral Chemotherapy?
Some patients receive their chemotherapy through pills, capsules or liquid they swallow at home. Oral chemotherapy is just as effective as chemotherapy we administer on an outpatient basis in our clinic. If you are eligible for chemotherapy at home, your treatment will work just as well – as long as you follow instructions from your medical team.
Chemotherapy at Home: What to Expect
We thoroughly prepare you for this type of treatment, with advice such as:
- Make sure you understand how often to take the drug(s) and how much to take (the dose). Try to take your treatment at the same time every day and under the same circumstances, using tools like your phone to help remember. Always double-check the dose.
- Keep a diary to record the times and dates that you take the drug(s) and to note how you feel.
- Keep your drug(s) in its original container. Do not store it near a shower or on a windowsill, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
- Wash your hands before and after each treatment.
We encourage you to share questions or concerns with us during treatment, especially if you suspect you are experiencing a side effect. A doctor or nurse is always available, either by phone or in person at our main Cancer Center.
