Outpatient Chemotherapy
Outpatient Chemotherapy at Stanford
Outpatient treatment means you go home the same day. We encourage you to bring a friend or loved one, though we ask that you only have one visitor at a time because of space and that they are over age 12.
The most likely way you will receive chemotherapy is through an intravenous (IV) infusion at one of our outpatient clinics:
- Infusion Treatment Area at our main Cancer Center in Palo Alto
- Redwood City Infusion Therapy Center
- South Bay Cancer Center
Chemotherapy at Stanford Cancer Center
Patients at our main Cancer Center will find:
- Eight different seating areas, each with comfortable, reclining chairs and a TV
- Private rooms with a small bed (an alternative option, based on your preference and room availability)
- Free Wi-Fi (many patients bring laptops or other devices)
- Complimentary juice and crackers in the clinic, as well as several cafes and cafeterias downstairs (you and your guests can eat during chemo; we suggest you eat normally on your treatment day and stay well-hydrated)
- Blankets for your comfort (but please dress in layers)
Outpatient Chemotherapy: What to Expect
A typical treatment session involves:
- Checking in
- Getting your blood tested and (sometimes) your IV inserted to save time
- Briefly waiting while a registered nurse and pharmacist double-check your doctor’s orders, to make sure we have the right patient, the right drug(s) and the right dose calculations
- Getting settled with the help of a nurse assistant, with a nurse then checking your IV and giving you any additional medications if needed
- Drugs arriving, which usually takes 30 minutes after you sign in because we cannot mix them ahead of time (each drug comes in its own bag and is checked at every step)
Sessions can last anywhere from an hour to eight hours. We will let you know beforehand what to expect.
