Our Approach to Transcranial Surgery

Our doctors perform transcranial (through the skull) surgery to remove tumors at the base of the skull or brain.

In some cases, endoscopic endonasal surgery is a recommended and complete treatment option. In other cases, the tumor’s size, shape, or location demand the traditional approaches to skull base surgery such as transcranial skull base surgery. There are some instances when both approaches are used during a single operation.

In addition to offering all types of transcranial surgery approaches, our team conducts research into new advances to ensure that we can offer patients the most advanced transcranial surgery options, including some that may not be available yet anywhere else.

What to Expect from Transcranial Surgery

The surgeon makes an incision in the scalp and removes a section of bone to access the tumor. The doctor then removes the tumor (or as much as possible) while protecting surrounding tissue. After removing the tumor, the surgeon replaces the section of bone and closes the incision.

Hospital recovery periods generally range from a few days to a week. Recovery time following surgery generally ranges from a month to six weeks.
