Weekly attendance as a volunteer is essential. We understand some absences are unavoidable (family emergencies, illness, vacations etc.); however, you are expected to notify your supervisor regarding absences (in advance) so arrangements can be made to cover your shift.  3 no shows, no calls or inconsistent attendance may result in dismissal. Long time volunteers: If you are going to be absent for more than three months, you need to contact Volunteer Resources and your supervisor and inform us you will be taking a Leave of Absence.

Stanford Health Care has a long and proud tradition of volunteer services. We like to recognize and honor our volunteers who contribute valuable hours to our patients, families and staff.

National Volunteer Week: Each year we celebrate our volunteers during the National Volunteer Week (usually in April). It is a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary things through service.

Volunteer Appreciation Tea: Each year we celebrate our volunteers during our annual Appreciation Tea. Our volunteers are ambassadors and we want to say thanks to each of you.

Please contact the Volunteer Resources and your supervisor if you are not continuing your volunteering at Stanford Health Care. You can drop your badge off at the Volunteer Recourses located in the Main Hospital, H1130H. If you are unable to drop off your badge, please mail it directly to us at:

If you do not provide hours for 3 months, your status will be in be inactive.

Health Clearance - All volunteers need to update their Health Clearance annually. You will receive a notice via email reminding you to do this prior to the due date. Failure to update your annual Health Clearance may result in termination as this is a hospital policy. You may contact Occupational Health Services at 650-723-5922, if you have any questions.

Flu shot – The CDC recommends all healthcare personnel (including volunteers) be vaccinated to prevent disease and its complications including death to patients, coworkers, family, and the community.

The Health Clearance and Flu shot are both free for Volunteers.

Volunteer are required to wear a photo ID badge at all times while volunteering. The badge identifies you to patients, families, visitors and staff. The badge must be worn in the upper right or left hand side of the body. If you forget or lose your badge, please go directly to the Photo Identification office located on the ground floor of the main hospital (lower level).

Please contact the Volunteer Resources office if you like to request a copy of your volunteer hours or you need a verification letter. Hospital policy precludes Volunteer Resources from providing letters of recommendation. Please give us two weeks to process verification letters.

Free parking is only available during your scheduled volunteer shift.

Weekday Volunteers – Park in the Hoover Pavilion Gararage
The Hoover Pavilion Gararge is located at 217 Quarry Rd. It can be accessed from Palo Road, or Sweet Olive way. It is conveniently located across from the Stanford Shopping Center at Quarry Rd. and Sweet Olive Way.

To Park:
1. Scan badge at the entry gate.
2. Parking is available on basement floors L1-L3

To Exit:
1. Scan Badge at the exit gate.

Please note: Staff parking requires a permit. Citations may be issued by Palo Alto Police Department if volunteers are parked in staff parking.

Marguerite Shuttles
Free public transportation from the parking garage to the Hospital is readily available. The Hoover Direct or HD shuttle, is a direct non-stop line from the garage to the Hospital and runs every 5 minutes between 4:20am and 9:30pm.

Weekend Volunteers - Park in the Pasteur Garage A
The Pasteur Garage A is located at 200 Pasteur Drive. The garage is the first driveway on your left when heading towards the fountain entrance of Stanford Hospital. Volunteer parking is located in the nested area on level 4 of the garage. You will need to badge in/out of the garage.

To Park:
1. Badge in at the first entrance gate.
2. Drive down to Level 4 and badge in at the second entrance gate.

To Exit:
1. Badge out at the first exit gate.
2. Drive up and badge out at the second exit gate.

Volunteers have a few options:

• They can continue volunteering in the area they have been assigned;
• They may ask to be assigned to a different area; or,
• The volunteer may decide to stop volunteering altogether.

Nonetheless, we ask volunteers to provide a 2-week notice when vacating a placement.

Volunteers are responsible for recording their hours of services. If you are volunteering in the main hospital you need to stop by the Volunteer Resources office and use the touch screen monitor to login at the beginning of your shift and log out at the end of your shift. The office is located on the first floor, Guest Services, Room H1130H.

Off-site volunteers - Log their hours via an online portal called VicNet, which is located on the Volunteer Resources website.

Volunteers need to maintain a professional appearance since they represent the hospital to patients, families and visitors. Each volunteer is required to wear their volunteer photo ID at all times during their volunteer shift. Volunteers wear a red volunteer polo shirt, sweater or cardigan, with black pants. Closed-toed comfortable shoes are a must.

Volunteers are not permitted to wear jeans, capris, shorts, sweatpants, mini-skirts, spandex, halter and tube tops, hats, sandals, open-toed shoes, perfume, after shave, large jewelry or political buttons or stickers.

Lectures: Free lectures are presented by various departments in the medical center. Please visit Stanford Hospital and Clinics Health Library for more information at: http://healthlibrary.stanford.edu.

Coupons: Volunteers receive a free cup of tea or coffee (not espresso) or a fountain beverage and a snack from the Hospital cafeteria or Redwood City Clinic cafeteria during volunteer shift (red coupon book).

Stanford Credit Union: The Stanford Credit Union is also open to Volunteers. When joining, the volunteers must show their picture ID badge.

Library Access: Volunteers have "access privileges" to Lane Medical Library by showing their Stanford Volunteer photo ID. You can use materials in the library, but cannot check them out.
