Volunteering
High School Program
The High School Volunteer Program offers youth ages 16-18 an opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas throughout Stanford Health Care. High school volunteers provide valuable service to patients, families, and staff while gaining experience and self-confidence. The High School Program will run from June 15th-August 10th, 2018. *If you are unable to volunteer once per week, every week during this 8-week commitment, please do not apply as you will not be accepted into the program.
Volunteer Opportunities and Roles
Our High School Volunteer roles include assignments in the Gift Shop, Information Desk areas, and Outpatient Clinic administrative areas. Students placed at the Information Desk areas escort visitors, provide directions, or run errands. Gift Shop volunteers assist customers and restock merchandise. Volunteers at our Outpatient Clinics assist with wayfinding, offering amenities, or office tasks. High School Volunteers are not allowed to shadow, observe, or conduct research. Please note that there are no high school summer volunteer opportunities in our inpatient units or departments with hospital beds.
Application Process
The application for the 2018 High School Program is now closed. We have a limited number of opportunities and do not guarantee every applicant a spot. Applications received will be carefully reviewed, and volunteers who are selected for an interview will be notified by March 21th.
If you are selected for an interview, you will be required to submit 2 letters of recommendation. Interviews will be held the weeks of April 2nd and April 9th at the main hospital in Palo Alto.
Commitment
Volunteering can be a fun activity and very rewarding, but it is also a serious commitment. The Stanford Health Care High School Program requires the following commitment:
- One or two shifts per week (approximately 6-8 hours per week). The majority of shifts take place Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8am-6pm.
- Volunteer a minimum of 40 hours between June 15th-August 10th. No verification of service hours will be released until 40 hours have been completed.
- No more than one (1) missed shift during the 8-week commitment (volunteer must be excused by supervisor).
- Students will wear a Stanford polo shirt with black pants during their shift (shirt provided)
Please consider carefully whether this time commitment will fit your schedule as the departments depend on their volunteers.
