Spider Vein Causes
Spider Vein Causes
No one is exactly sure why vascular lesions form. The blood vessels in port wine stains, for example, swell from a lack of nerve fibers keeping them in check. But it's unclear why that happens, and it's unpreventable.
The same is true for strawberry hemangiomas, which are dense clumps of blood vessels. And while cherry angiomas seem to run in families, no one knows why.
While valve problems may play a role in spider veins, doctors have also identified likely risk factors for the condition:
- Inherited genes
- Hormone changes
- Pregnancy
- Injury
- Sun damage
- Aging
- Wearing tight clothing that cuts off circulation (though compression stockings can help)
- Sitting or standing in one spot for extended periods
