Glaucoma
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve, usually from high pressure inside your eye. The optic nerve sits behind the retina at the back of your eye. Its nerve fibers send the visual information the brain needs to create images.
Half the people who have glaucoma do not realize it, and it is a leading cause of blindness for those over 60. But we provide the screening, monitoring and timely treatment to stop that from happening.
Stanford Glaucoma Expertise
Our program provides all the elements needed to catch glaucoma early and protect your vision:
- Top doctors: Our doctors are recognized worldwide for their glaucoma expertise. They completed additional fellowship training in glaucoma care and now train new fellows. Not only do many patients come to our doctors for an initial diagnosis, but many also turn to them for second opinions.
- Latest tools: We use the latest diagnostic and treatment tools, from sophisticated imaging to lasers and instruments that help us perform minimally invasive surgeries.
- Research: We are studying ways to restore the optic nerve, or prevent damage in the first place.

Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
