Dilation and Stenting
What Is Dilation and Stenting?
Some people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and esophageal cancer develop narrowing (strictures) in their esophagus, which can make simple tasks, such as breathing and swallowing, difficult. You may also develop strictures because of complications from certain esophagus treatments, including esophagus resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection.
Strictures can happen anywhere along your esophagus and vary in length and thickness. Dilation and stenting are two procedures, often performed together, to help widen the opening of your esophagus:
- Dilation gently stretches narrowed tissue, expanding the opening of your esophagus with the help of special tools.
- Stenting helps keep your esophagus open by implanting a flexible mesh tube (stent).
We perform dilation and stenting as an outpatient procedure using a special tool. With advanced training on the physiology of the esophagus, our endoscopists are especially skilled in delivering these treatments.
