What Causes NASH?
We do not know for certain what causes NASH. However, if you have certain medical conditions, you face a higher than normal risk.
These conditions include:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Being overweight (learn more about obesity)
- Having high levels of fat in your blood (hyperlipidemia)
- Showing early signs of diabetes (prediabetes), such as insulin resistance
- Having a combination of obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia, known as metabolic syndrome
- In women, a hormone imbalance that causes cysts to grow on your ovaries (polycystic ovary syndrome)
