Treatment for NASH
Part of what makes Stanford unique is our team approach to care. From liver imaging specialists to NASH experts and a dedicated dietician, our shared goal is to help you reverse liver disease and reduce your risk for further damage.
Stanford researchers are working toward a cure for NASH. Until we find one, the best treatment includes controlling medical conditions that can make your condition worse.
Your treatment may include:
- Lifestyle changes: Our team includes a nutritionist who specializes in working with liver disease patients. We help you make changes toward achieving a healthy weight. Learn more about medical nutrition therapy.
- Medication: As a national leader in liver disease research, Stanford is often one of the first programs offering new medications through clinical trials. Your treatment may also include established medications to lower levels of fat (lipids) in your blood.
- Prevention: Preventive care helps you preserve your current liver functioning and can slow the progression of your disease. Treatment may include avoiding alcohol or taking extra steps to keep other medical conditions, such as diabetes, under control.
- Regular testing: We use blood tests and non-invasive imaging tests to see how your liver is responding to treatment and measure liver damage. Regular testing also helps us catch the early signs of complications, such as liver cancer. Learn more about liver disease testing.
- Liver transplant: If your condition does not improve with treatment, you may reach a point where your liver is no longer able to do its job (liver failure). When this happens, you need a liver transplant. Learn more about our Liver Transplant Program.
If you live in Northern California, you will not have to travel far for expert care. Our network of outreach clinics gives you access to nationally renowned liver disease specialists right in your local community.
