What Is Heart Failure?

Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough oxygenated blood to meet the needs of the body's organs. The heart keeps pumping, but not efficiently.

Heart failure affects nearly five million adults in the United States. It is a serious condition and can be a difficult diagnosis for patients to receive. The progressive disease usually requires a team of medical professionals to manage the range of symptoms that disrupt a patient's life. While we cannot reverse many of the conditions that lead to heart failure, we can often treat congestive heart failure with good results.

Heart Failure Symptoms

Symptoms of heart failure include swelling of the legs and ankles, as well as irregular heartbeats. Consult with your doctor if you have unexplained symptoms, such as shortness of breath or dizziness. These could be early signs of heart failure. Learn more about heart failure symptoms.

Causes of Heart Failure

Many heart conditions may lead to heart failure. Learn more about the causes of heart failure.

Heart Failure Diagnosis

In addition to a physical examination, we will order specialized diagnostic tests to confirm a diagnosis of heart failure. Learn more about heart failure diagnosis.

Heart Failure Treatments

We are experts at managing heart failure. Our deep expertise enables us to tailor a treatment plan that meets your needs. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and medications to heart transplant surgery. Learn more about heart failure treatments.
