Heart failure can be caused by a heart condition, another medical condition, like diabetes, or lifestyle habits such as drug abuse. Heart failure causes include:
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Cardiomyopathy
- Congenital heart disease
- Chronic lung disease and pulmonary embolism
- Coronary artery disease
- Diabetes
- Drug abuse
- Excessive sodium intake
- Heart attack(s)
- Hemorrhage and anemia
- Heart valve disease
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Infections of the heart valves and/or heart muscle
